It’s safe to say that 2019 has been the year of the unexpected battle royale mode. Next up to receive one is Forza Horizon 4, which will receive a 72-car mode titled The Eliminator.

Going live at 10am Pacific Time / 6pm in the UK today, the 12th of December, The Eliminator will see up to 72 players join a game to battle it out to be the last car standing, or rolling. Players start off in low-level cars, such as Mini Coopers, before earning upgrades to get better and faster cars via eliminating opponents in head-to-head races. As is the custom in battle royales, the arena walls will shrink over the course of the game, making the action tenser and pushing players together as they fight for supremacy. Or drive for supremacy, anyway.

Instead of a free-for-all, The Eliminator looks to play out like a series of duels. Upon sighting an opponent you can tootle your horn at them which will prompt a head-to-head race to a point on the map. It’s not just 1-v-1 though, as other cars can interfere with the race, ramming you or your opponent off the racetrack to help one or the other of the competitors to win. If you win the race you’ll get a chance to upgrade your car or get a better car, if you lose it’s game over and you’re back to the lobby.

We’ve seen plenty of games add battle royales to their mix over this year, with games such as Civilization VI and Tetris 99 amongst others bringing the fight and fury to their systems. With only a few weeks left in the year, all bets are off to see who’ll be next to integrate the ever-popular battle royale framework into their game.
